The European Banking Authority (EBA) has become the first European agency in France to be registered for its environmental performance under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The registration was issued by the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition for a duration of three years. The scope of EMAS covers all the EBA’s operational and core business activities.

“The European Banking Authority is very proud to have been awarded the EMAS certificate. This result acknowledges our sustained efforts in recent years to reduce our environmental footprint. We remain fully mobilised to continue promoting sustainable development, as an organisation as well as through the mandates conferred to us by the legislators in the European financial sector”, underlined François-Louis Michaud, Executive Director of the EBA, upon receiving the EMAS registration.

The EBA is committed to complying with the applicable local and European Union environmental regulations as well as to developing knowledge, finding technical solutions and adjusting its organisation and behaviour with a view to reducing its environmental impact. This includes:

  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions with a special focus on travel;
  • improving energy consumption performance;
  • improving its waste production, segregation and recycling;
  • maximising the use of electronic solutions and green public procurement to limit its material impact;
  • implementing environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations in its policy making, risk assessment and supervisory convergence work.

The EBA annual public environmental statement reflects the EBA’s progress on these commitments. In particular, as part of its environmental efforts, the EBA procures electricity from renewable energy sources. In addition, taking into account the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the EBA has been complying with the EMAS gas emissions reduction targets by cutting by half external meetings at the EBA premises and staff missions.

Notes to editors

EMAS is a premium management instrument developed by the European Commission for companies and other organisations to evaluate, report, and improve their environmental performance.

EMAS promotes continuous improvements in the environmental performance of organisations by the establishment and implementation of an environmental management system, the evaluation of the performance of such a system, the provision of information on environmental performance, an open dialogue with the public and other interested parties and the active involvement of employees.
